Your 72-hour power outage plan

A simple, three-day plan for keeping the essentials running. Figures as of 2026-10-28.

Three days is the standard planning window. On October 22, 2026, the UK government asked households to be ready for up to three days of disruption, a window it says France, Ireland, and the Netherlands also use (GOV.UK). Ready.gov advises supplies to last "several days" (Ready.gov).

Step 1: List what needs power

Ready.gov's first step is an inventory of the things you rely on that use electricity (Ready.gov). Start with these, then size them in the calculator:

LevelWhat runsEnergy for 3 days
Stay connectedPhones, Wi-Fi router, 6 LED bulbs≈ 3.1 kWh
Keep foodAbove + refrigerator≈ 10.9 kWh
Stay warm (winter)Above + furnace blower 8 h/day≈ 26.4 kWh

Estimate Midpoints of the Champion wattage chart ranges, our default hours (fridge 8 h, router 24 h, LEDs 5 h, chargers 3 h), divided by 0.85 usable. For scale, a 2.04 kWh station like the Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 covers the first level for about 2 days.

Step 2: Pick your power

Step 3: Food, water, and medicine timing

Step 4: Safety checklist

FAQ

Why plan for 72 hours?

Three days is the common planning window. The UK's October 2026 campaign asks households to prepare for up to three days of disruption, and says France, Ireland, and the Netherlands use the same window. FDA's medical device outage booklet asks whether you have supplies for a minimum of 3 days.

How much battery do I need for 3 days without power?

For phones, Wi-Fi, and six LED bulbs, about 3.1 kWh over 3 days with our 0.85 usable factor. Add a refrigerator and it's about 10.9 kWh. Use the calculator to match your home.

How long will food last in a power outage?

Ready.gov says a closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer about 48 hours. Throw out food that has been at 40°F or higher for 2 hours or more.
