Wildfire power shutoffs (PSPS): a calm backup plan

PSPS outages usually come with notice, which makes them one of the easiest outages to plan for. Figures as of 2026-10-28.

How a shutoff works

What 2 days of essentials takes

Estimate Refrigerator, ceiling fan, Wi-Fi, 6 LED bulbs, and phone charging use about 3.4 kWh/day, or about 8.1 kWh for 2 days (Champion wattage midpoints, our default hours, ÷ 0.85). Open the PSPS scenario →

Because you usually get notice, a battery is a good fit: charge it fully the day before, pre-chill the fridge and freezer, and keep the doors closed. Ready.gov says a full freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours (Ready.gov).

Safety during fire weather

FAQ

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?

A planned outage a utility uses during high fire-risk weather to reduce the chance its lines start a wildfire. PG&E says it aims to notify customers two days ahead, one day ahead, and just before a shutoff.

How long does a PSPS outage last?

PG&E's goal is to restore power to all customers within 24 hours after severe weather has passed, once crews inspect the lines. Total outage time depends on how long the weather lasts, so planning for 2 days is a reasonable starting point.

How much battery do I need for a 2-day PSPS?

Our PSPS scenario (fridge, ceiling fan, Wi-Fi, lights, phones) uses about 3.4 kWh a day, or about 8.1 kWh for 2 days with the 0.85 usable factor. A 5 kWh-class station plus a few solar panels, or one station recharged in the car, can cover it.

Are there rebates for backup power in PSPS areas?

In California, as of October 2026: PG&E's Generator & Battery Rebate (up to $300, +$200 CARE/FERA), SDG&E's Generator Assistance Program ($150 power station, $300 generator), and SCE's portable power station rebate (up to $200). Eligibility rules apply; check each utility's page.
