Expansion batteries: add capacity later
Expandable stations accept the maker's add-on batteries. Adding batteries increases kWh (how long it lasts), not watts (how much runs at once).
| Base unit | Add-on battery | Per battery | Max add-ons | Max capacity (1 unit) | Battery price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra | EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra (Series) Smart Extra Battery | 6.144 kWh | 4 Up to 5 batteries per inverter (30 kWh); the base unit already includes 1, so up to 4 extra. Capacities, limits, and prices come from the brand pages linked above. For the BLUETTI B300K's max of 6 per Apex 300, we used BLUETTI's expansion guide, and the Apex 300's 2,764.8 Wh / 3,840 W specs come from BLUETTI's Apex listing; its surge rating is not captured yet. Brands also sell bundles (for example a BLUETTI 2×B300K bundle at $2,049) that can cost less than separate batteries. We have no verified data on Goal Zero Yeti 1500X expansion, so it isn't listed.
How to choose
- Output watts must cover everything running at once, and surge watts must handle motor start-up (fridges, pumps, furnace fans). Sizing guide →
- Capacity (kWh) sets how long it lasts. A 1 kWh unit running a 100 W load lasts roughly 8.5 hours after the 0.85 usable factor Assumption.
- Expandable units (marked "portable/expandable") accept add-on batteries. The EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra lists expansion up to 90 kWh.
- To power hardwired circuits like a furnace or well pump, you need transfer hardware installed by an electrician. Listed prices: EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 2 $1,599, Anker Smart Home Power Kit $1,499 list, Jackery Smart Transfer Switch $1,299 list (source).
- Rebates: there is no federal credit for portable stations. Some California utilities (PG&E, SDG&E, SCE) offer rebates in wildfire areas. California details →
