How long will a power station run a refrigerator?

Short answer: a 1,000 Wh station runs a typical efficient top-freezer fridge for about 22 hours, and a 2,000 Wh station roughly doubles that. Bigger side-by-side fridges use about 75% more power, so expect less. Figures as of 2026-11-02.

Step 1: Find your fridge's average watts

The yellow EnergyGuide label lists yearly kWh. Average watts = kWh per year × 1,000 ÷ 8,760 hours. Median ENERGY STAR certified values by type:

Fridge typeMedian kWh/yearkWh/dayAverage watts
Top-freezer3620.99≈ 41 W
Bottom-freezer5561.52≈ 63 W
Side-by-side6401.75≈ 73 W

Step 2: Runtime by station

Hours = battery Wh × 0.85 ÷ average watts Assumption: 85% usable

Station (capacity, surge)Top-freezer (≈41 W)Bottom-freezer (≈63 W)Side-by-side (≈73 W)
Anker SOLIX C1000 (1,056 Wh, 2,400 W surge)≈ 22 h≈ 14 h≈ 12 h
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 (1,070 Wh, 3,000 W surge)≈ 22 h≈ 14 h≈ 12 h
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 (2,042 Wh, 4,400 W surge)≈ 42 h≈ 27 h≈ 24 h
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 (4,096 Wh, 6,000 W surge)≈ 3.5 days≈ 2.3 days≈ 48 h

Capacities and surge ratings from our power station table (October 2026). Example: 1,070 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 41.3 W = 22.0 hours.

A field test by Spare Theory measured 22.9 hours from a 1,000 Wh station with a fridge averaging 34 W in a 22 °C room, and 18.5 hours in a 27 °C room with door openings (Spare Theory). That lines up with the math above.

Step 3: Check the starting surge

A refrigerator runs at 150–400 W and needs 800–1,200 W for a moment to start the compressor (Champion chart). All four stations above list surge ratings of 2,400 W or more.

FAQ

How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a refrigerator?

About 22 hours for a typical ENERGY STAR top-freezer fridge (362 kWh/year, about 41 W average), and about 12 hours for a side-by-side (640 kWh/year). That assumes 85% of the rated capacity is usable and nothing else is plugged in. Older fridges, hot rooms, and door openings shorten it.

How many watts does a refrigerator need to start?

The Champion wattage chart lists a refrigerator at 150–400 W running and 800–1,200 W to start. The station's surge rating needs to cover the starting watts.

Why isn't runtime just battery size divided by the fridge's watts?

The compressor cycles on and off, so the average draw is much lower than the running watts. Dividing by the yearly kWh (from the yellow EnergyGuide label) gives a better average.

How long is food safe in a fridge without power?

Ready.gov says a closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours. Throw out food that reaches 40 °F or higher.
