How long will a power station run a sump pump?
Short answer: hours, not days, in a real storm. A 1/3 HP pump uses about 650 W while running, so a 1,000 Wh station holds a bit over an hour of actual pumping. How long that lasts depends on how often your pump kicks on. Figures as of 2026-11-02.
Your pump's label (amps Γ 120 V) beats any chart number below. Test any setup on a dry day by pouring a bucket of water into the pit.
Step 1: Pump watts
| Pump | Running watts | Starting watts |
|---|---|---|
| 1/3 HP | 500β800 W | 1,000β1,600 W |
| 1/2 HP | 800β1,050 W | 1,300β2,150 W |

Step 2: Runtime math
Hours = battery Wh Γ 0.85 Γ· (pump watts Γ share of time running). We use 650 W, the middle of the 1/3 HP range. Assumptions: 85% usable; duty cycles are examples
| Station (capacity, surge) | Pumping time in the battery | Runs 10% of the time | Runs 25% of the time | Runs 50% of the time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anker SOLIX C1000 (1,056 Wh, 2,400 W surge) | β 83 min | β 13.8 h | β 5.5 h | β 2.8 h |
| Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 (2,042 Wh, 4,400 W surge) | β 160 min | β 26.7 h | β 10.7 h | β 5.3 h |
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 (4,096 Wh, 6,000 W surge) | β 321 min | β 53.6 h | β 21.4 h | β 10.7 h |
| Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus (5,040 Wh, 14,400 W surge) | β 395 min | β 65.9 h | β 26.4 h | β 13.2 h |
Capacities from our power station table (October 2026). Example: 1,056 Wh Γ 0.85 Γ· (650 W Γ 0.25) = 5.5 hours. Each start adds a short surge, so real runtime is a little lower.
How often a pump runs varies a lot. One EcoFlow community member reported their pump running 50β200 times a day normally and more than 3,000 times on a very heavy rain day (Reddit). That's why we show a range.
Step 3: Check surge
The station's surge rating should cover the pump's starting watts. All four stations above list 2,400 W or more, which covers the Champion ranges for both 1/3 HP (up to 1,600 W) and 1/2 HP (up to 2,150 W).
Longer outages
For multi-day storms, pair the station with a generator or a battery backup pump, or move to an installed system. Compare costs in power station vs generator and transfer switch options. Winter melt is covered in keeping the heat on.

FAQ
How long will a power station run a sump pump?
It depends on how often the pump runs. A 1/3 HP pump draws about 500β800 W (Champion). At 650 W, a 1,056 Wh station has enough energy for about 83 minutes of actual pumping. If the pump runs 25% of the time, that stretches to about 5.5 hours.
What size power station do I need for a sump pump?
One whose surge rating covers the pump's starting watts: up to 1,600 W for a 1/3 HP pump and 2,150 W for a 1/2 HP pump on the Champion chart. Then size the battery for the pumping hours you expect.
Is a battery backup sump pump better?
For long or frequent outages, many homeowners use a separate 12 V backup pump in the same pit, which switches on by itself and also covers a failed primary pump. A power station can be an extra layer. Ask a plumber what fits your pit.
