The Pentagon's FORTRESS grid plan: what it means for your house

A Pentagon plan to take military bases off the civilian grid has been all over social media. Here's what's confirmed, what isn't, and what a homeowner can take from it. Facts as of November 2, 2026.

What was announced

On Sept. 30, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced FORTRESS ("Federal Operations for Resilience, Troop Resources, Energy, Supply, and Survivability"). He said every major military installation in the U.S. "is going to generate its own power, independent of the civilian grid" so bases stay running if the grid is taken down by "cyber attack, by sabotage or by any means" (DefenseScoop, Oct. 7, 2026).

The plan has five pillars: energy independence, supply-chain resilience, a strategic reserve, installation hardening and cyber resilience, and space and spectrum resilience. A program office was set up in early October.

What's not confirmed

The "90 days without outside support" figure comes from an Oct. 25 Fox News report based on documents it reviewed. Snopes rated the claim "mostly true" but notes the Defense Department hasn't explicitly confirmed the 90-day requirement (Snopes, Oct. 26, 2026).

It's also not happening overnight. A senior defense official said on Oct. 20 that the Pentagon is still assessing what it will cost across about 500 bases, and that fully reaching the goal "could take decades" (Air & Space Forces Magazine). Early options include microgrids and battery backup storage.

What it doesn't mean

FORTRESS is about military readiness. Officials haven't warned of a specific threat to the civilian grid, and the plan doesn't tell households to do anything. You don't need 90 days of power at home.

The useful takeaway for homeowners

The Pentagon is using the same building blocks you can: local power, batteries, and a way to disconnect from the grid safely. At home, that scales down a lot:
