How long will a power station run a chest freezer?

Short answer: a 1,000 Wh station runs a medium efficient chest freezer for about 35 hours, and a 2,000 Wh station roughly doubles that. Chest freezers sip power compared with fridges, so they're one of the easiest things to keep running. Figures as of 2026-11-02.

Step 1: Find your freezer's average watts

The yellow EnergyGuide label lists yearly kWh. Average watts = kWh per year × 1,000 ÷ 8,760 hours. Median values for ENERGY STAR certified chest freezers:

Chest freezer sizeModelsMedian kWh/yearkWh/dayAverage watts
Small (under 6 cu ft)231840.50≈ 21 W
Medium (6–12 cu ft)222250.62≈ 26 W
Large (12 cu ft and up)43460.95≈ 39 W

Source: U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR Certified Residential Freezers list, chest-freezer product classes, pulled 2026-11-02 (49 models). These are certified test values, not metered household use. The large-size row has only 4 models. Older or non-certified freezers use more.

Step 2: Runtime by station

Hours = battery Wh × 0.85 ÷ average watts Assumption: 85% usable

Station (capacity, surge)Small (under 6 cu ft) (≈21 W)Medium (6–12 cu ft) (≈26 W)Large (12 cu ft and up) (≈39 W)
Anker SOLIX C1000 (1,056 Wh, 2,400 W surge)≈ 43 h≈ 35 h≈ 23 h
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 (1,070 Wh, 3,000 W surge)≈ 43 h≈ 35 h≈ 23 h
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 (2,042 Wh, 4,400 W surge)≈ 3.4 days≈ 2.8 days≈ 44 h
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 (4,096 Wh, 6,000 W surge)≈ 6.9 days≈ 5.6 days≈ 3.7 days

Capacities and surge ratings from our power station table (October 2026). Example: 1,070 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 25.7 W = 35.4 hours.

Step 3: Check the starting surge

A freezer runs at 100–500 W and needs 500–1,000 W for a moment to start the compressor (Champion chart). All four stations above list surge ratings of 2,400 W or more.

FAQ

How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a chest freezer?

About 35 hours (roughly 1.5 days) for a medium ENERGY STAR chest freezer rated 225 kWh/year, which averages about 26 W. That assumes 85% of the rated capacity is usable and nothing else is plugged in. A hot garage or an older freezer shortens it.

How many watts does a chest freezer need to start?

The Champion wattage chart lists a freezer at 100–500 W running and 500–1,000 W to start. The station's surge rating needs to cover the starting watts.

Can I unplug the freezer and plug it back in to save battery?

Yes. Ready.gov says a full freezer keeps its temperature for about 48 hours with the door closed, so running it in shifts works. Check it with a freezer thermometer and keep it at 0 °F or below.

Does a chest freezer use less power than an upright?

Usually. Chest freezers lose less cold air when opened, and the ENERGY STAR list shows medium chest models clustered around 225 kWh/year. Compare the yellow EnergyGuide label on your own unit.
